Pushpanjali + Kauthuvam
Pushpanjali is the invocatory item in a Bharathanatyam recital or margam. Through the Pushapanjali, the dancer invokes the blessings of the almighty, the Guru, the musicians, and the audience for the successful completion of the program.

This pushpanjali will be followed by Nandi Kauthuvuam. Kauthuvam is a hymn in praise of a deity. It is a traditional item in a bharthanatyam margam, which focuses on complicated footwork and movement variation. A kauthuvam is structured with rhythmic syllables or sollus, which are first recited and then sung.
Today’s Kauthuvam is in praise of Nandi Bhagavan. Nandi is depicted as a sacred bull and loyal vahana of Lord Shiva. He is often portrayed in a seated position facing the entrance of Shiva temples and symbolizes strength, righteousness, and unwavering devotion.
“Ammai appane, endhum arul petra, nandi bhagavanin padam parivom”
We seek the blessings of Bhagavan Nandi who has the privilege of carrying Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathy on his shoulders.
